State/SDM Attestation –  After notary attestation, the documents are sent to either state attestation or SDM ( Sub Divisional Magistrate). In state attestation, the state government which issued the documents verifies the authenticity of your submitted documents. State attestation takes about 30 working days to complete as many government bodies are involved in this process. 

On the other hand, in SDM attestation the documents are submitted to the sub-divisional magistrate for authentication. SDM is a faster and less expensive way of verification than state attestation because fewer government bodies are involved in the process. The verification process in SDM attestation takes about 3-4 working days to complete the process. So if you are planning to travel to countries that are part of Hague Nations then SDM attestation is the best method of document authentication. 

However, if you are applying for a student visa then your educational documents such as a degree certificate will be verified by HRD (Human Resources Department). For all other documents, you can choose to go for either state attestation or SDM.

MEA (Ministry of External Affairs) – Upon State/SDM authentication, the documents are sent to MEA. In this step, the Ministry of External Affairs carefully examines all the information provided in your document.
